How to support Rooted in Jesus

Rooted in Jesus is an initiative which has taken us constantly by surprise over the 7 or so years in which we have been offering it to African dioceses. We have been delighted by the way in which diocese after diocese has wished to use it, always hearing about it by word of mouth, and astonished by some of the testimonies of transformation which we have received. Africa is waking to the need for discipleship.
Bishop John Hayden writes: "The course has had a major influence on our work in Tanzania, bringing many nominal members into a deep commitment to Christ, and if funding was available there is no doubt many other countries would adopt it. Please pray about this."

Invitations continue to come in as one bishop speaks to another. This is an extract from the address made by Bishop Dino Gabriel of Zululand to his Diocesan Synod in October 2009:

"I am convinced more than ever before that spiritual renewal and growth in our parishes is directly proportional to the intentional development of small faith-sharing groups. I have a dream. I dream of the Diocese of Zululand of the future as a dynamic network of cell groups where brothers and sisters are nurtured in their spiritual and human growth and equipped for mission. During the last twelve months or so, the Lord has put an urgency in my heart for a Christian Discipleship course called 'Rooted in Jesus'." We hope to send a team in 2010.

Rooted in Jesus is wholly administered and supported by ReSource, which is a self supporting charity funded largely by donations. If you would like to help us you can do it in any of the following ways:

Join our prayer network

Africa is a challenging place to live and minister. We are constantly overwhelmed by the dedication and commitment of the group leaders and coordinators. But we know from long experience that no discipleship programme will flourish without a lot of prayer support - both for the initial conferences and for the group leaders and coordinators as the programme unfolds. If you would like to join our prayer network of intercessors we would be delighted to hear from you. Please email us or give us a ring.

Make a one off gift to Rooted in Jesus

Rooted in Jesus runs on minimal costs; all team members cover their own expenses in full, and administration is supported by outside funding. Few African dioceses can afford to cover the cost of a residential conference for lay leaders - for many who attend our conferences this is the first opportunity they have had to gather together for any form of ministry training. Some do not possess Bibles, and where this is the case we try to provide them as a gift. All those who will become group leaders need a Leader's Guide and a set of Rooted in Jesus course books, and we print these at cost price and provide them free of charge to the receiving diocese. We also provide certificates of achievement for those who complete each book, and in some cases make small grants towards the expenses of the local diocesan coordinators who oversee the programme in each diocese.

You can give online through Charity Choice. They make no charge for their services, and you can Gift Aid your donation as well, so we can claim an extra £2.82 tax refund on each £10 you give - just fill in your name and address when prompted. If you prefer to donate by cheque, you can download and print out a GIFT AID form here and return it to us by post with your donation to Rooted in Jesus, 13 Sadler St, Wells, Somerset BA5 2RR. Please make your cheque payable to Rooted in Jesus. For more information about Gift Aid see below.

Other ways to support Rooted in Jesus financially

There are many ways that you can give to ReSource in order to support Rooted in Jesus - as a Trust, or a local Church, or by leaving a legacy in your will.

As a church

Rooted in Jesus’ income has come mainly from individual Christians and Churches in the UK. If you support our ministry, you can ask your Church to include us in their mission giving. Support from local Christian communities is vital to us. We are keen to keep churches informed about our work. If your church would like to know more, we may be able to provide a speaker with first hand experience of our work in Africa.  Please either email us or telephone us on +44 (0) 1749 673950 (Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm).

Leave a donation in your will

Leave a legacy to Rooted in Jesus and you will help Christian mission even after your death. And it reflects Christian faith by  allowing new life to come even from death. If you’re interested in finding out more about how you can include Rooted in Jesus in your will, please email us or telephone us on  +44 (0) 1749 673950 for further information.

As a Trust

Grant-making trusts are an important source of income for Rooted in Jesus, often providing us with additional income for projects that we cannot fund from our usual budget.  Our work in developing a Children's version of Rooted in Jesus was helped by a generous donation from a charitable trust. If you represent a grant-making trust and would be interested in giving to Rooted in Jesus, or you know of a grant-making trust that we could apply to for funding please contact us.

Sponsorship

If you’d like to organise a sponsored event to help support Rooted in Jesus, you can download a sponsorship form here. Please feel free to photocopy as many forms as you need. Then return the forms with your donation to us at ReSource, 13 Sadler Street, Wells, BA5 2RR. Please note that if your sponsors tick the Gift Aid box, they can increase the value of their gift by almost 30% at no cost to themselves.  The sponsorship form explains how.

Gift Aid FAQs

How do I know if I can gift aid my donation?

You are a UK taxpayer if:

bullettax is taken from your wages at source (ie PAYE)
bulletyou fill out a self-assessment form
bulletyou have any taxable savings (in a building society, for instance), or a pension plan, or investment income
bulletyou have paid capital gains tax, or expect to pay it in the near future.

If any of these apply, you can apply for Gift Aid on your donations.

How do I know if I pay enough tax to qualify?

As long as you pay enough tax in the year to match the tax that Christian Aid claims back, your donation will qualify. For example, if you donate £100 in the current tax year, Christian Aid could claim back £28.00.

What if I pay the higher rate of income tax?

If you are taxed at the higher rate of 40%, Christian Aid can still only reclaim tax at the basic rate of 20%. The benefit to Rooted in Jesus works out at 28p for every £1 you give. This is made up of a 25p refund on the tax you have already paid and an additional 3p is a transitional tax relief. However, higher rate tax payers can also claim the difference between the higher rate of tax (40%) and the basic rate (20%) on the total (gross) value of a donation made. If you are due a tax refund, then you can use your self assessment form to indicate that you would like to donate that refund to Rooted in Jesus. We are registered for this scheme and the form to donate can be found here. Our unique HM Revenue & Customs reference is XN705010.  For more information about claiming back higher rate tax please visit the HMRC website.

I pay capital gains tax. Can I still gift aid my donations?

Yes. The Gift Aid rules for capital gains tax, which are applied to profits from sales of investments, are the same as they are for income tax.

What if I no longer want ReSource to claim back the tax on my donations?

Just let us know and we will make sure that tax is only reclaimed on gifts up to the date you contact us. Call +44 (0) 1749 673950 or email using our [URL] contact us form.

What if I move house?

Please let us know if you move house or any of your details change. This will help us keep records up to date. Call +44 (0) 1749 673950 or email us.

Can Gift Aid be claimed retrospectively?

We can claim Gift Aid retrospectively for up to six years. This means that if you make a declaration today, we can reclaim tax on the eligible donations you have made in the past six years, so long as you have paid enough tax to cover the amount we are reclaiming. If you have any questions about this, please call +44 (0) 1749 673950 or email us.

Can I get gift aid if I give shares to Rooted in Jesus?

Yes!  If you are a tax payer you can claim gift aid for the full value of the shares you donate. This can be very tax efficient – especially as capital gains tax is waived when you give shares to a charity.  This can be a complex area, so do take advice or contact us to find out more.

How does the Chancellor’s transitional relief for Gift Aid change things?

The Chancellor has agreed to offset the reduced amounts of Gift Aid that charities can claim by granting ‘transitional relief’ for the 3 years from April 2008. This does not affect donors or their tax calculations at all – but it does mean that charities will be able to claim an extra 3p on every £1 that is gift aided - putting us just where we were before the reduction in tax rates. This would be worth £30 on a £1,000 donation that is gift aided.
