This is a brand new course, written for 2007. Combining traditional elements with a fresh approach, it is ideal for groups and churches who want something a little different which will act as a stimulus for future growth. The course material is contained in a main Coursebook, with an accompanying member’s booklet containing brief notes and a pattern of spiritual exercises for each member to follow during the week between meetings.

Written by Alison Morgan (author of The Wild Gospel and editor of the Rooted in Jesus discipleship course now in wide use throughout East Africa), and Bill Goodman (experienced both in parish ministry and as a theological college lecturer), Season of Renewal offers a gentle but challenging approach to Lent. It includes notes on the history and meaning of Lent as well as suggestions for how to tie the course into the liturgical pattern of the church.

The course itself is divided into six sessions - five for the five weeks between Ash Wednesday and Maundy Thursday, and one final session for the week after Easter, structured round a shared meal. Each session includes creative and practical elements as well as a focus on scripture and some times of prayer.  We hope that participation in the course will bring about significant spiritual growth both for course members and in the life of the church of which they form part, and various suggestions are offered for how to maintain the impetus which has been created.

 Weekly themes:

1. Seasons of change
2. Praying with Jesus
3. All things new – growing as individuals
4. Depending on the Holy Spirit - resourcing the church
5. Made new for mission - reaching the community
6. Celebrating the kingdom

Comments from those who have used the course:

Our five Lent Fellowship Groups have all responded enthusiastically to 'Season of Renewal'. The music and ‘arty bits’ were movingly effective. It is wonderful to have a course which is “Into God” rather than “About God” - Revd Matthew Grayshon, Hanwell

It went really well. There was something for everyone because of the different teaching styles. It was easy for me to use as well. We are all going to do the spiritual exercises as our ‘doing something for Lent’ -
Helen Green, pastorate leader, Holy Trinity Leicester

A group of about ten of us finished 'Season of Renewal' last night. It was unanimously agreed that it had been the most inspiring and helpful Lent course we had ever shared in. We particularly appreciated the various practical items included in it, especially the "hot seat" during the fourth week... This did much to help us believe that we might be of some use to the Lord in his mission after all! - Canon John Gunstone, Didsbury

Here in the Ironstone Villages we are in the middle of quite an exciting Lent... We have about 55 people in our Lent Groups using 'Season of Renewal'. For some churches this would be very ordinary stuff but for us it is a huge encouragement and a great blessing as 4 years ago no one had even been in a small group or a Lent group, and only a handful of people had heard of the Holy Spirit! - Revd Beverley Stark, Melton Mowbray

I am writing to thank you for the Lent course for Season of renewal. It has been a Spirit led change in my group of Mothers' Union ladies. Last year my vicar suggested it for our Lent study. Because there was so much in it, we repeated it again this year. Because I felt it was so good for the ladies, I found other groups in the church asking me what I thought about it. We ended up with four groups in the Church doing the course over Lent this year. I think most people from teenagers to the elderly felt there was something in it for them. Today we had a Renewal of Baptism vows in the morning Service and had 18 people rededicating their lives to the Lord. So I felt that you must know about it and it will encourage you as well as us here at St. Saviours Church, High Green, Sheffield. May God richly bless your Ministry - Pat White, Mothers Union
